IPVanish VPN is one of the few VPNs to offer a cloud storage solution as part of its service. It also claims to be the only VPN that operates and manages all its servers.
It’s highly customizable, which might not appeal to beginner users, but will attract those with a clear understanding of how a VPN works.
That’s all well and good, but what you really want to know is whether IPVanish VPN can provide decent speeds for torrenting.
I’m going to address that later in this IPVanish VPN review, along with some other important points, like:
- Does IPVanish VPN work with DisneyPlus?
- Will IPVanish VPN protect my privacy or does it keep logs?
- Is IPVanish VPN a viable alternative to ExpressVPN?
Sign up with IPVanish VPN via its website today and you can test-drive this unusual VPN for 30 days without any financial risk.
IPVanish VPN isn’t your average cybersecurity tool so I encourage you to read this article in full to understand what distinguishes it from the rest. If you don’t have time for that, you can a rough idea by checking out the highlights below:
IPVanish VPN – The Highlights
Streaming – one of the best VPNs for Netflix but struggles with other geographically restricted streaming sites, failing to access BBC iPlayer or DisneyPlus
Gaming – High speeds and low ping rates make IPVanish VPN one of the best VPNs for gaming

Most VPNs are easy to download and install, but IPVanish VPN is so slick, it makes the competition look decidedly sluggish.
At just over 8MB, it takes seconds to download IPVanish VPN for macOS. Its other apps are similarly lightweight and easy to install.
IPVanish VPN’s installation process is seamless and requires minimal user intervention.
Install, login, connect and enjoy your first anonymous browsing experience.
Once logged in, new users have the option of reading a tutorial or just launching their IPVanish VPN app.
Although all IPVanish VPN’s apps have a consistent design, they are also consistently cluttered.
It does mean you can find out everything you could possibly want to know about each server’s location, latency, and speeds, and filters so the servers are listed according to the lowest ping rate or a specific protocol.
Few other VPNs offer this level of customization and it is useful if you’re using IPVanish VPN for gaming. If you just want a VPN for anonymous browsing, you can simplify the process by using the quick connect option.
All in all, IPVanish VPN is an advanced piece of technology that gives the user a lot of granular control. It may not be the best VPN for beginners, but it’s ideal for advanced users – especially if you like tweaking settings.
IPVanish VPN Features
You won’t find an IPVanish VPN review that doesn’t mention the impressive array of features IPVanish VPN has on offer.
The only drawback is, these features vary from app to app, which is unusual in a VPN.
For instance, while split-tunneling is available on the Android app, it’s not supported by the iOS app. Similarly, Android, Windows, and macOS apps all have a kill switch, but the iOS one doesn’t.
This makes writing an IPVanish VPN review all the more challenging because not every app has been created equal. I’ll come back to this later in the IPVanish VPN Review of Apps section.
In the meantime, let me show you some of the unusual features IPVanish VPN has to offer:
Every IPVanish VPN user gets 250MB of free cloud storage space where images, documents, and messages are safely stored protected by the same military-grade encryption as IPVanish VPN uses to protect them in transit.
Tier 1 Server Network
Virtually no VPN operates and manages all its own servers, but that is exactly what IPVanishVPN does.
IPVanish VPN has built its own network according to its own specifications – namely, speed and privacy. No outsourcing also means better security, faster speeds, and lower prices.
This is probably the most outstanding feature of IPVanish VPN and makes it a tempting alternative to ExpressVPN.
Customizable Auto-connection Options
Most leading VPNs give users the option of activating auto-connect when connecting to public W-Fi networks but IPVanish VPN goes the extra mile.
Users can tweak it to automatically connect when it detects specific sites so you never visit a torrenting site without VPN protection.
IPVanish VPN Review of Speeds and Servers
According to IPVanish VPN reviews, this VPN is either one of the fastest, one of the slowest, or somewhere in between as speeds vary notably from server to server.
It seems only IPVanish VPN believes itself to be the “world’s fastest VPN”. According to everyone else, it hovers somewhere in the middle. It’s not quite as fast as ExpressVPN but can often outdo the likes of Surfshark VPN and CyberGhost VPN.
Its London server can even outpace the formidable NordVPN.

It’s New York server, on the other hand, produces speeds only slightly faster than the somewhat mediocre speeds CyberGhost VPN manages:

At no point did IPVanish VPN produce the fastest speeds, however, so its claims should be taken with a large pinch of salt.
IPVanish VPN is similarly average when it comes to the size and distribution of its server network. They may all be managed in-house, but there’s only 1482 of them, despite claims of 1,500+ (trust me – I counted them).
Of those, over half are situated in the US, so it’s geographical diversity isn’t up there with the best either.

IPVanish VPN Review of Apps
IPVanish VPN apps are beautifully lightweight, making them ideal for mobile devices and older operating systems.
It is one of the few to offer a dedicated app for FireOS, making it the best VPN for Fire Sticks and Amazon Fire TVs.
On the downside, as we mentioned earlier, its iOS app lacks the functionality of IPVanish VPN’s other offerings.
On a more positive note, however, the apps IPVanish VPN has developed for the following operating systems are fully functional:
- Amazon Fire TV
- Routers (DD-WRT, Tomato, Asus-WRT, Merlin)
The more eagle-eyed amongst you will no doubt have noticed a glaring absence – the alleged best VPN for gaming doesn’t have an app that’s compatible with popular gaming consoles, like PS and Xbox.
Still, with its impressive range of router apps, you can protect everything from your Apple to your Xbox.
Let us not forget that IPVanish VPN also has a functioning app for iOS, it just lacks a few features – namely, a kill switch and a split-tunneling option.
IPVanish VPN Streaming
IPVanish VPN has a large concentration of servers in the US which should mean it should sneak around geographical restrictions on US-based streaming sites very easily. It should, but it doesn’t.
Although IPVanish VPN is one of the best VPNs for Netflix, it seems to lose its way when trying to access other US streaming sites.
DisneyPlus won’t let it in, BBC iPlayer brushes it off like an annoying bug. On the plus side, as many IPVanish VPN reviews emphasize, it does work with:
- BBC iPlayer
- It works seamlessly with:
- Amazon Prime
- ITV Player
Gaming with IPVanish VPN
Because it operates all its own servers IPVanish VPN is one of the best VPNs for gaming, with low ping rates and minimal lag time.
The fact that you can connect as many devices as you want is also an advantage, although the lack of gaming console-compatible apps does restrict that to some degree.
You can rectify that problem by installing IPVanish VPN onto your router – you can then protect everything in your house, from your gaming console to your smart fridge.
IPVanish VPN is great for gamers looking for the fastest server as it displays ping rates and traffic loads in its server selection interface so you can easily see which one is whizzing along and which is lagging.
IPVanish VPN will protect your privacy when buying games online and bypass geographical restrictions so you can get those much-sought-after early-bird deals.
IPVanish VPN P2P and Torrenting
Most IPVanish VPN reviews make a song and dance about this VPN’s prowess when it comes to torrenting and that’s hardly surprising. Not only does IPVanish VPN permit P2P can deny this VPN’s ability to handle P2P traffic.
IPVanish VPN supports P2P traffic on all its servers but has optimized those in countries where torrenting is legal. For IPVanish VPN users, the Netherlands is one of the best server locations to head for and, with 67 servers to choose from, you should manage some decent download speeds.
If you’re not so concerned about security and want to hide your IP address and optimize your connection speed, you can use IPVanish VPN’s SOCKS5 proxy instead.
This works effectively with torrenting clients like Deluge, Vuze, and uTorrent, giving users “a fast connection, unlimited peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic and access from any location”.
Unfortunately, IPVanish VPN doesn’t offer port forwarding which many torrenters use to boost their download speeds but, as one of the fastest VPNs, it does a decent enough job without it.
IPVanish VPN will keep you safe while torrenting and give you excellent speeds. Security comes in the form of a kill switch and robust DNS leak protection.
It may not be the best for streaming, but when it comes to torrenting, IPVanish VPN is a great choice – combining speed with security.
IPVanish VPN Review: Does it Work in China?
IPVanish VPN is refreshingly upfront about its limitations when it comes to operating in heavily censored regions like China and North Korea.
It states quite clearly that: “Our IPVanish VPN apps are unlikely to work if you are attempting to connect to our VPN from inside of China or other countries that block our domain or website”.
On the plus side, more advanced users can manually configure IPVanish VPN to connect to its servers’ IP addresses, rather than using server names.
It does warn, however, that in China, many of these addresses have been blacklisted, which will make connecting virtually impossible.
While some VPNs, like NordVPN for instance, have introduced specialized servers to bypass China’s many restrictions, IPVanish VPN hasn’t.
There are IPVanish VPN servers in Japan and other nearby locations but it’s unlikely you’ll be able to connect to them from China.
If it wants to compete as one of the best VPNs of 2020, IPVanish VPN would benefit from finding a way to configure servers so they can bypass China’s stringent geo-blocks.
In the meantime, if you’re planning a trip to China any time soon, maybe opt for a more reliable option like ExpressVPN.
IPVanish VPN Review of Privacy
IPVanish VPN reviews have given it a hard time over privacy.
Back in 2016, it was reported that IPVanish VPN “responded to a summons by handing over information on a user’s activities”.
This was when the VPN was still owned by Highwinds. It has since been purchased by StackPath who assessed it and said “There was no record of any logs being stored”.
IPVanish VPN CEO, Lance Crosby, confidently states: “With no exception IPVanish does not, has not, and will not log or store logs of our users”.
IPVanish VPN has yet to jump on the independent security audit bandwagon but hopefully, it will do so in the not too distant future. In the meantime, the more security conscious among you might want to consider a no-logging VPN that’s proven that status (like ExpressVPN) or had it independently audited (NordVPN).
If, like me, IPVanish VPN’s claims are sufficient to put your mind at rest,

IPVanish VPN Security
IPVanish VPN claims to be “The World’s #1 VPN for Security” but do IPVanish VPN reviews agree? To a large degree, yes. IPVanish VPN ticks all the right boxes in terms of DNS leak protection and kill-switch security.
It also supports the most secure protocols, namely OpenVPN, IKEv2, and L2TP/IPSec. It hasn’t yet embraced the new WireGuard protocol which uses state-of-the-art cryptography to create a fast yet secure connection.
IPVanish VPN also safeguards your data with military-grade 256-bit AES encryption.
If you choose to use the SOCKS5 proxy service, however, it’s important to remember that this is not a secure connection. It may hide your location but it won’t encrypt your traffic.
Of course, IPVanish VPN does manage all its own servers which boosts security insofar as no part of the service is being outsourced to third parties. On the other hand, however, there is little that makes IPVanish VPN’s security stand out from the crowd.
Maybe introducing zero-knowledge architecture onto its servers or using RAM only instead of saving to a hard drive could boost its score in this category. In the meantime, security-wise, IPVanish VPN is sufficient but nothing out of the ordinary.
IPVanish VPN Review of Pricing
You won’t find a free trial mentioned in any IPVanish VPN review because such a thing doesn’t exist. Instead, IPVanish VPN remains steadily average, offering the same 30-day money-back guarantee period as most of its rivals.
Its prices are similarly average, starting at $6.49 per month on its one-year subscription and going up to $11.99 per month if you opt for the monthly package.
These prices are similar to those charged by our top VPN, ExpressVPN. In other words, for an extra 18c per month, you could access all the most popular streaming sites, get better security, and enjoy the protection of a proven no-logging policy.
With prices like these, IPVanish VPN will struggle to compete. Surfshark VPN is faster, more versatile, and less than half the price if you’re willing to commit to a two-year subscription.

IPVanish VPN Coupons and Discounts
IPVanish VPN reviews don’t make enough noise about this VPN provider’s deals discounts.
While many just run the same deal for years (think ExpressVPN and CyberGhost VPN), IPVanish VPN likes to mix it up a bit.
The deals themselves aren’t quite as good as they first appear, however, as IPVanish VPN lists the monthly subscription rate as the retail price for all plans.
In other words, the “57% discount” on the one-year plan works out at 57% off the monthly subscription fee of $11.99, rather than 57% off the yearly rate of $6.49 per month.
IPVanish VPN Customer Support
It seems some websites fail to keep their IPVanish VPN reviews up to date and several made disgruntled noises about the lack of any live chat support.
This is not the case, however. IPVanish VPN has a 24/7 live chat option, hosted by ZenDesk, but it doesn’t operate in quite the way you might expect.
Rather than having customer support representatives on hand to answer your questions, IPVanish VPN relies on bots. If you can’t get the answer you were after to that way, you’ll be redirected to a ticket system cunningly disguised as a live chat service.
Sadly, the ticketing system isn’t much to rave about either. A response took around 24 hours and, even the, wasn’t particularly informative.
The online support section is more in line with the competition. It is easy to navigate and offers a wide range of troubleshooting tools and FAQs.
Most VPNs, like other online businesses, have a social media presence and IPVanish VPN is no exception to that rule.
There are new posts on its Facebook page every couple of days but it doesn’t seem particularly responsive to Facebook messages. The same is true of its Twitter profile.
If you want to find out how to install this VPN or change your protocol, you’re best off visiting its YouTube channel.
There you’ll find a host of useful video tutorials covering everything from installation to split-tunneling.
The most user-friendly VPNs offer multi-faceted customer support and IPVanish VPN’s lean offerings make it look rather half-hearted by comparison.
If you want to contact them, there is only one option – the email ticketing system. I’d certainly like to see IPVanish VPN introduce a real live chat option rather than the bot-run excuse it has at the moment.
Failing that, at least a telephone number or two would help to boost its customer support service.
IPVanish VPN is a mixed bag. Its speeds make it highly competitive while its Tier One server network provides a reassuring level of security. On the other hand, its inability to access certain popular streaming sites limits its usefulness.
For gaming, it’s got a host of strong points, but the lack of geographical diversity in its server network is a little disappointing.
IPVanish VPN is one of the best VPNs for torrenting, with its impressive download speeds, but it hasn’t always stuck to its no-logging claims which is a concern.
When it comes to cross-platform compatibility, IPVanish VPN both shines, with its versatile FireStick app, and withers with its iOS app.
Pricing wise, IPVanish VPN is about average but, when you can get ExpressVPN for much the same monthly fee, there’s really no competition. I’d go with ExpressVPN every time.
IPVanish VPN might be the best VPN in some circumstances, but it’s far from being all the things it claims to be – such as “the world’s fastest VPN” and “the World’s #1 VPN for Security”.
I prefer transparency and honesty to self-promotion and aggrandizement.
IPVanish VPN FAQs
Can IPVanish VPN access Netflix?
Yes. IPVanish VPN consistently finds a way around Netflix’s geo-blocks even though it struggles to unblock sites like DisneyPlus and BBC iPlayer. If you want a full, unlimited streaming experience, I’d recommend signing up with ExpressVPN instead.
Does IPVanish VPN work in China?
No, IPVanish VPN states that its “apps are unlikely to work” in heavily censored regions. There is a workaround, however, for those with enough technical know-how to complete a manual configuration.
Is IPVanish VPN good for torrenting?
IPVanish VPN is considered to be one of the best VPNs for torrenting and its high download speeds and SOCKS5 proxy option are great for P2P traffic.
Can I get IPVanish VPN for free?
IPVanish VPN doesn’t have a free trial, although you can sign up for any of its plans and get 30 days of free use with its money-back guarantee.
I feel like I have a love/hate relationship with IPVanish VPN and I think it’s hard not to.
It’s got some really good points, like its self-managed server network, and some irritating ones – like the fact that over half its servers are in the US, thereby limiting geographical reach.
The interface is informative but overly cluttered, it streams but not with every site, and it’s great for gaming but doesn’t have any apps for gaming consoles.
If you want a high-speed VPN for Amazon Fire TV or a Fire Stick, IPVanish VPN is tough to beat. For almost everything else, you can get better protection and more consistent speeds by paying an extra 18c per month for ExpressVPN.
A little more consistency, a more affordable long-term plan, and some tweaking in the streaming access department could shift IPVanish VPN from the ranks of the mediocre to heady heights of the leading VPNs. It’s not there yet, though.
